Staying apart from mother and motherland is miserable for everyone. Despite having a great affection and patriotism, we Nepali are living in different continents of the world for instances in pursuit of education, work, business and others. In the context of Cyprus trend of Nepali coming here can be tracked back to 1996. In 1996s, it is said that there were maximum 5 Nepali here whereas nowadays around 1500 Nepali are seen. Among them 60% are students, 35% asylum seekers and 5% housemaids. Though living in different continents, we have indeed a same goal striking to see our country prosperous and peaceful. Having motivated with these feeling and committing to the statements like “Whatever we can do with what we have and from wherever we are” and a vehicle for staying connected and doing something for our Matribhoomi (place where one was born) and Karmbhoomi (place where one lives to earn living) under the motto ‘For Nepali by Nepali’, the association so called Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) was established in October 2003. Within a short period of six years, despitefacing a tough situation at its inception, now it has already got a very impressive list of accomplishments in which every NRN can justly take pride.
Dynamically, this NRNA is functioning via 55 established National Co-ordination Councils (NCC) across the world. One of them is NRNA-NCC, Cyprus. Since its re-establishment on 13th May 2007, with impressive registered members of 690, we have successfully organized and completed a number of projects. We list below some of our activities being undertaken after the re-establishment of our association:
1.In conjunction with the overall aim of NRNA, i.e. to unite Nepali and co-ordinate with all Nepali associations, we organized a picnic program in Larnaca (one of the five districts) on November 2007 in co-ordination with other existing associations namely; Nepalese Friendship Society of Cyprus (NFSC) and Nepal Cyprus Association which was attended by Nepali from every corner of Cyprus almost 500 and greatly enjoyed.
1.Likewise, we transferred US$600 and Euro 772.50 being collected from Cyprus NRNs from all districts of Cyprus namely Nicosia, Larnaca, Paralimini, Limassol and Paphos on March and September 2008 to Kathmandu for Save Dolma Sherpa Fund under ‘Save Dolma Sherpa campaign’; one of our remarkable identification of NRN unity worldwide and Prime minister natural disaster relief fund for Koshi river flood respectively.
1.On 16 September 2008, we filled prerequisite applications for registration of our association to Ministry of Interior; which has become successful upon its registration on 5th October 2009 as per Association and Institute law of 1972, Law 5772. It is a great achievement and proud of all Nepali herein.
1.With a view of celebrating a New Year 2009 and exchange of our ideas, we organized a New Year program with other interesting programs such as Nepalese dances and lucky draw which was visited not only by Nepali but also by the residents of India, Srilanka and others
1.In pursuance to problems faced by Nepali students coming to Cyprus for study purpose based on false opinions like easily transferable to other EU countries, work permit, paid internships, easy to find jobs which are almost rather FALSE. Because of ongoing financial crisis and a high increase in cyclical level of unemployment, thousand of local employees and other are laid off. Even more as per European Economic Area (EEA) policy, which basically allows free movement of EU workers within EU is creating huge problems for 3rd national countries’ workers and students. Incorporating these prevailing circumstances, we sent news to various news agencies and were indeed published in few Nepali websites and National and Local newspapers in Nepal. Therefore, nowadays, a number of students, workers and asylum seekers are returning back to Nepal.
1.In parallel to the quote “No success or achievements in material terms worthwhile unless it serves the needs or interests of the country and its people”, the personality Mr. Puskar Shah; who is of course the identification of Nepal and Nepali around the worldwide, was welcomed by organizing a Cycle rally in Nicosia and showing him along with Cyprus NRN participants in various local TV channels of Cyprus have added value to the brand of NRN – NCC, Cyprus. On top of that, he was also honored by acting President of the Republic of Cyprus in the presence of Our NRN community.
1.Broadly speaking, social integration is the foremost necessity in bringing the two communities closer to each other. Considering this, we have been organizing various activities in order to integrate the Nepalese community with that of Cypriot community. “Blood Donation” on 4th May 2008 in association with Red Cross society of Cyprus and other cultural programs in co-ordination with the local organizations has been carried out throughout the Cyprus since the formation of NCC, Cyprus. Besides, honoring the Cypriot personals closely related with Nepal and the Nepalese, bringing in news media every important program organized are the important movement of NRNA-NCC Cyprus in the field of promoting Nepal and the Nepalese in the foreign land.
1.Having with regard to Nepali living in Cyprus and of course for other countries is of the social or national insurance contribution, for instance in the context of Cyprus, 6.8% of gross salary that any of us paying are eligible to receive either as unemployment or redundant allowance in Cyprus or post employment pension in Nepal as per Social Insurance Contribution law of Cyprus; for example people from Philippines do receive such benefits but NOT us. Therefore, having with regard to this, as per talks between NRN-NCC, Cyprus and Ministry of labour and Social insurance, the solution to receive such benefits is to enter into a bilateral agreement between Cyprus and Nepal labour ministries. Thus, we, NRNs, should consider this in our priority and put forward to relevant authority during our 4th Global conference.
1.As per declaration and decision made on 3rd global conference by ICC under “Adopt a charity project”; we have established a water project in Pyang VDC of Ilam District with aim of providing water facilities directly and indirectly to 80 families with investment of Euro1.000 being already been provided to a local club so called ‘Nawasrijanshil yuwa club’ in Pyang VDC to successfully accomplish the said project and
1. We participated in a demonstration organized on 4th October 2009by the KISA, a non-political organization for migrants and immigrants’ rights along with other existing associations of various countries on the island against racism.
In addition to the above facts, we lately held an interaction program to collect views and suggestions of Nepali, being already provided within NRN-NCC, Cyprus’s report to facilitate existing and prospective Nepali in areas like:
1.The ministry of Education (MOE) should be equipped with a space in such a way that the students can easily get pertinent information of their interested countries via concerned NRN-NCCs. For instance, an interested student coming in to Cyprus can contact an office bearer of NRN-NCC, Cyprus. Or alternatively, NRNA should facilitate such information either on its own Secretariat or in a building which is under construction.
2.The Advertisements of Educational Consultancies; which are almost based on full of false opinions should only published upon receiving consent for such from concerned authority. Otherwise severe penalty and fine should be imposed.
3.At the present situation, the work permit for Nepali citizen has been suspended by Cyprus authority. Therefore, for the benefit of Nepal and Nepali citizen, the same kind of talk should be forwarded from the Government of Nepal to Cyprus Authority to facilitate such opportunity again in Cyprus.
Billion US Dollars remittances annually, catalyst for being attracting more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Bridhaashram project at Devghat, Trolleys at international airport in Nepal, various computers to various districts, facilitating communication and dialogue amongst the Nepali Diaspora for the protection of and welfare of Nepali globally and maintaining our excellent partnership with the Government and public / private institutions for social-economic development of Nepal are few contributions of Nepali Diaspora globally. The consequences of these can be observed for instance, as per the recent annual Human Development Index by United Nations Development programs (pa.press.net) which primarily depicts the greatest long-term improvements have been shown by Nepal with further emphasis of progress should be concentrated on Education and health.
Nevertheless, approval not granted so far for registration of NRNA Association in Nepal, even though NRNs are ready to establish $100 million NRN Development mutual fund, granting of special NRN Identity card instead of dual citizenship which does not confer the rights that Persons of Nepali Origin (PNO) are supposed to be getting under dual citizenship and even more the bill passed in 2007 defining NRN is contrary to the proposed constitution of NRNA respectively are constructive challenges that we should focus in order to speed up the NRNs’ movements.
